Serving Astoria, OR

Your Paving Contractor in Astoria, OR

Smooth Rollin’ Sealcoating and Paving serves Astoria, the Clatsop County seat and the oldest city in Oregon, sitting on the south shore of the Columbia where it meets the Pacific. We run out Highway 30 from the metro and work the hillside residential streets, the downtown and Uniontown commercial districts, and the port and industrial ground along the river.

Astoria puts two conditions on asphalt that inland cities do not. The first is rain: 67 inches in an average year, close to double what Portland gets, and relentless through the winter rather than concentrated. The second is grade. Astoria is built on a hillside and a great many driveways here are genuinely steep, which means water moves fast across them and the pavement has to be detailed so that water leaves at the sides rather than running the full length and getting under the bottom edge. Get the drainage right on an Astoria driveway and it will last. Get it wrong and the rainfall will find the mistake within two winters.

Nearby we also serve Warrenton, OR, Seaside, OR, Cannon Beach, OR and St. Helens, OR. See every city we cover on our service areas page.

Why Choose Us

The Smooth Rollin' Advantage in Astoria

We deliver exceptional results backed by transparent pricing and a commitment to quality.

We Build for 67 Inches of Rain

Astoria takes close to double Portland's rainfall and takes it steadily rather than in bursts. Drainage is not a detail here, it is the job. We grade and detail edges so water leaves the surface rather than working its way underneath.

We Handle Steep Hillside Driveways

A steep approach moves water fast and puts real stress on the surface at the top and bottom transitions. We detail those transitions deliberately instead of running one uniform section from the street to the garage.

One Crew From Grading to Final Stripe

One team from excavation through striping. Everything we install in Astoria carries a 1-year warranty on our workmanship.

Straight Answers on Price

Coastal jobs carry travel, and we price that openly rather than hiding it in the square footage. You see the scope and the number.

Our Promise

Quality You Can Count On

Every Astoria job gets the same crew and the same walk-through, and we tell you the travel cost openly rather than folding it into the rate.

Our Services

Complete Asphalt Services in Astoria

We offer a full range of asphalt paving and maintenance services to keep your property safe and looking its best.

Fresh asphalt being laid and compacted on a coastal property

New driveways, lots and yard surfaces built for coastal ground. On this side of the Coast Range the two things that decide how long asphalt lasts are what sits underneath it and where the water goes, and neither is visible once the job is finished. We excavate to depth, build and compact a base that suits the actual subgrade rather than a standard specification, set the grade so runoff leaves the surface, then lay and compact the asphalt. Coastal sites vary far more than valley sites do, from sand to silt to reclaimed lowland inside a few miles, so we walk every Astoria site before pricing it.

Sealcoating and crack sealing matter more here than almost anywhere inland, because the rain does not let up. Sealcoat blocks UV, rain and vehicle fluids and restores the surface color. Crack sealing is the higher-value of the two by a wide margin: a quarter-inch crack sealed now costs a fraction of the pothole it becomes after one coastal winter, because every crack on this coast is a direct route for water into your base. We will tell you honestly when a Astoria surface is still worth maintaining and when it is past that point.

Parking stall lines being painted on a coastal lot

Parking layout and striping for Astoria motels, restaurants, rentals and visitor parking, including ADA stalls and access aisles to current requirements, fire lanes and crosswalks. Coastal lots take their whole year of wear in a compressed season, so we schedule striping to land before the season rather than during it. A lot striped to the wrong dimensions is non-compliant however clean the paint looks, so we lay it out properly rather than tracing the previous lines.

Coastal weather turns a small crack into a pothole faster than anywhere inland, so repair timing matters here. We handle crack sealing, patching, saw-cut and full-depth repairs, base repair and drainage correction on Astoria driveways and lots. Where water is the cause, and on this coast it usually is, we fix where the water is going as part of the repair rather than patching the symptom and leaving the mechanism running.

Cisco and his guy did a great job patching in asphalt for us. He is attentive and hardworking, and the results speak for themselves. We will have them back out once the weather warms back up to seal coat all the asphalt for a much smoother and cleaner look. Can’t wait. If you have any kind of paving needs, do not hesitate to reach out to Cisco, you’ll be happy you did.

They were quick to show up and bid the job. Once the bid was accepted, they showed up quickly and got the job done. They took their time to do a good thorough prep and cleaned up everything at the end of the job. Very professional and courteous. Highly recommend.

Couldn’t be happier. They showed up on last minute notice and far exceeded our expectations with their attention to detail and level of care for our homes driveway. Before, the driveway was a mess, but after Smooth Rollin’ Sealcoating and Paving was done our driveway was more functional and looked incredible. I’ll definitely use for more projects down the road.

Cisco and team did incredible job on my 20 year old driveway. They spent almost 2 days in prep and asphalt repair sealing all the cracks. Final cost looks amazing but really need it to heal up before turning wheels on it. Hard workers in the heat of the day. Highly recommend them!

Cisco and his crew did a great job on the asphalt patching that I requested. He responded to my Angie’s request almost immediately and was at our home that afternoon to take a look at the work to be done. His bid was lower than that of other contractors that I contacted. Cisco was responsive to text messages and phone calls. I had him do some extensive seal coated after seeing the quality of his work. I’ve worked with many contractors in my nearly fifty years as a homeowner, Cisco is in my top three list. Friendly and easy to work with.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about paving and asphalt work in Astoria.

Yes, substantially. Astoria averages about 67 inches of rain a year against roughly 36 in Portland, and it arrives as sustained winter wet rather than short storms. That gives water a great deal of time to find any path into the base. The response is not thicker asphalt, it is better grading and edge detail so water runs off the surface and away from the driveway instead of standing on it or seeping under the edges.

It is a design consideration rather than a problem. A steep driveway sheds water quickly, which is good, but it concentrates flow at the bottom and puts stress on both transitions, where the driveway meets the street and where it meets the garage or flat area. Those two points are where steep driveways fail. We detail them specifically rather than running one uniform section end to end.

Paving installs a new surface and is the answer for new construction or a base that has failed. Sealcoating is maintenance: a protective layer over asphalt that is still structurally sound, shielding it from UV, rain and vehicle fluids. On the coast the distinction matters more than inland, because sustained winter rain finds any weakness quickly. Sealcoat over a failed base here buys one season, not several.

Every two to three years is the general guidance, and on the coast we lean toward two rather than three. Rainfall here runs well above the valley and it arrives as sustained winter wet rather than short storms, which gives water far more time to find a way into the base. Crack sealing should happen whenever a crack appears rather than on a schedule. New asphalt is the exception and needs to cure before its first coat.

Usually 24 to 72 hours depending on temperature and section thickness, and we give you a specific answer for your job before we leave. Coastal conditions can extend that, since cool damp air slows the surface cooling and curing. Full hardening takes considerably longer. For the first several weeks avoid parking in one spot for long stretches, turning the wheels of a stationary vehicle, and putting jack or trailer stands down without a board underneath.
